Wouldn't you need the axis 4 to be in line with axis 6 for it to have 6DoF?

serf |root |parent [-]

base, hip, elbow, wrist , wrist rotation, gripper.

so, six variables that produce a posture. 6DoF.

but explaining this makes me feel like i'm missing some deeper meaning in your comment?
