They should train them on skeet shooting with birdshot too

That doesn’t seem to work very well against most drones. Every government tested that 15 years ago and learned that drones win vs a well-trained man with a shotgun.

Source for the great drone birdshot test?

In my case, it was friends in college who were in ROTC. Some of their research/leadership projects at the time started with "try to enhance drone flight software so they can't be shot down by soldiers with shotguns" but after 2 months it was demonstrated that it was pretty trivial to make drones extremely difficult to shoot down.

So the project pivoted to "try to train soldiers to be able to shoot down drones" and from what I was told, that was a very difficult goal to achieve. As that was 15 years ago, I simply assumed drones have gotten even better at evasion since then and humans with shotguns haven't evolved much.

If you ever saw any of the FPV drone ukraine videos (which I don't recommend as they are very graphic) it seems like they move at standard dji quad copter speeds, chasing people for a bit, even the final push seems a bit slow. Not sure if that is them screwing with their targets in their last moments or an actual technological limitation of the sort of drones they are using.

Can you go into details about the mechanics behind what makes shooting them down difficult?

Experience in Ukraine says it's a decent last line of defense. Better than not having that line for sure.
