Alternative to Internet Archive

Now; i use the archive to archive my prolithic output of music. (i have over 300 albums.) The music is of my own creation.

Since the DDoS attack of 2024; Archive has been a hit or miss on the uploading factors. And many of my releases have specific dates for release. With the uncertainty of the uploads happening it causes me to break focus on working with music and watch the upload to make sure there isn't a 503 happening each file. (which sometimes happens frequently.)

I am in search of a similar uploading process with an unlimited amount of uploads. I don't want to make money off of my music. I don't want to individually input over 2000 songs; including their metadata and other factors.

Many sites that we both have heard of; have various limitations or are not privacy friendly platforms ran by a company that seeks to be Big Brother from 1984 and watch us in a Brave New World.

I would simply P2P my music on nicotine+ or even have a server for my music.

The only thing stoping me on P2P my music on nicotine is the requirement of have a big enough stickdrive to have it available all the time (along with other music and films i share already.) I could buy a 1TB one for that.

The server setup is quite complicated and searching online the past couple of days keeps leading me to... (o yeah i forgot to add how reddit has that popup now after a few seconds of looking at their site on the other post... and the google thing on devs. if you read both then the open source closing is that purpose.)

Though i keep getting results on this site.

Anyways; what i am seeking as an alternative would also include sharing my books, short films, and music. (all in one place.) The service would need to be free; and an easy uploading process. (similar to how the archive's works.)

or if someone could point me to an easy means of setting up a server... like what all i would need and how to make it possible, along with a fairly easy step by step explaining the process.

I like how Bill Wurtz does it at `https://billwurtz.com`. Dump everything on a server and list things manually in html.

Or you could let your webserver deal with the directory listing. Caddy's looks nice, is customisable too. Can't get simpler than that!

Bonus if also add a .torrent with the same as webseeds: Can make easier for visitor to grab in bulk and makes a way to keep sharing in further future. No strict need to run torrent client to act as webseed - just point at http url.

CasaOS on a Raspberry Pi works pretty well for this. Simple web interface, handles big libraries fine, and you don’t have to mess around with complicated server setup.

If it is your books, literally, then Zenodo is among the best for long-term preservation.

My books; wouldn't really fit in there. It would be akin to mad scientist musings from over a decade ago; that have been happening near exactly as what is happening through out the world today.

(the books i could host on neocities though.) as i would use that site to impliment the sharing.

You could give it a try; there are some pretty wild stuff there too. But, anyway, my comment was really more about the long-term preservation, which interests me personally. With the heavy link rot we're seeing already, what will the situation be in 10, 25, ..., 100 years? And is everything even worth preserving in the slop era?

Geeze, you've been using IA to host your own personal media projects? That's disappointing to hear. What's wrong with, like, SoundCloud, etc?

I rely on IA for literal public archival material like newspaper scans and broadcast recordings. Your usage of it seems a tad self-indulgent.

It seems like having a 1TB drive and p2p hosting would be the most pro-social move, here, if you're unwilling to pay for cloud hosting or otherwise participate in the market.

Yes. Soundcloud has a 3 hour limit; meaning with my 200 hours of music, i would require a lot of accounts, and i have a song that is 3 hours and 5 minutes long. And i have songs that are as short as 4 seconds long.

Bandcamp has a limit on the size of files you upload; which make it even more difficult as a lot of my songs are longer than 25 minutes. (which is precisely the amount their limit is.) Then if you sell something you can get up to a larger file size; unfortunately that is only about double the amount; and the said 3 hour song is 2.1GB on it's own.

Music distributors are unlikely to upload a couple dozen albums because i use excerpts in a creative manner of cartoons and anime or television shows. Which are not allowed on most of them. Plus i have no control over the release day.

All of the ones we both know about are individual song uploads, meaning the album that has 67 songs (released in 2019) with a bunch of five second to half a minute songs, it becomes mildly tedious.

I agree with the P2P idea as well, it is my last resort though. (as i still need to obtain the drive.)

Internet Archive; has the easy drag and drop of a folder and then type in some metadata for the entire release and wait about 20 or so minutes and it is released, no wait time, no individual song uploads, and practically unlimited. (with in reason.)

Nothing is ever free forever.

IA has been free for 30 years.

It is not free to maintain and it costs millions to run.

Someone else was paying for it so it can continue to be "free" for 30 years.
